Warcraft III

warcraft iii - 2002

Released in 2002, Warcraft III, for me,  was the “Abbey Road” of the original Blizzard Dev team. It was our first jump into a true 3D game, and pretty much set the visual standard for what was to become World of Warcraft. Being one of the work horses on the team, I created and modeled almost all the buildings in the game.

Warcraft III buildings.

The bulk of these buildings were actually hammered together over a year-ish period, just before launch. The production process usually involved some sort of pencil drawing, sometimes detailed, more often than naught, just a rough doodle on a piece of paper. Samwise would look it over, and the meshing, UV mapping, texturing and animation would be completed by me.

Some of the pencil drawings….

somewhere, in the stacks of drawings I have, are the more “doodlerific” concepts. Someday I’ll dig those out and add them to the presentation.

Alliance Townhall

Alliance Tauren Totem

Undead Slaughterhouse

…and the buildings

I’ve only included one version of each of the buildings. Not included are all the “building under construction” stages, nor the upgrade variants.
